To help us design a community benefits program that meets the needs of Don Summerville tenants we need every member of your household over the age of 16 to take this survey.
Working with the City of Toronto, tenants, community partners, neighbours and private developers, Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) is transforming its aging housing infrastructure and building better housing, neighborhoods, and a better Toronto for all. Toronto Community Housing’s holistic approach emphasizes physical, social and economic improvements to build safer, stronger and healthier neighborhoods while significantly enhancing the quality of life for tenants. As part of the revitalization process, local engagement strategies strengthen community capacity and leadership, support tenant participation in the planning process, and improve social and economic opportunities for tenants.
Toronto Community Housing and Applegrove Community Complex are committed to engaging tenants in all aspects of the revitalization process: planning, relocation, community action planning and community benefits.
During relocation, it is TCHC’s policy that tenants receive ample and sufficient notice before their move date. We anticipate tenants will receive the notice in early 2020 and TCHC is committed to ensuring that moves occur into the end of summer (August 2020) to accommodate families with children. All eligible relocated households are guaranteed the right to return to Don Summerville.
TCHC will work with tenants throughout the relocation and return processes. While the process of choosing a relocation home and relocating can be complex, numerous information meetings will be held and tenants will have many opportunities to meet with TCHC staff to ensure all households fully understand the process, as well as their rights and responsibilities.
In January 2020, TCHC launched a community benefits program for tenants as well as a community action plan. The physical redevelopment of Don Summerville is complemented by the social transformation of its population, fostering social cohesion and neighborhood connectivity.
Toronto Community Housing is working with development partners Context Inc. and RioCan, and with Applegrove Community Complex to deliver the Don Summerville Scholarship program, which recognizes the commitment of tenants to bettering the world around them and cultivating change in their career field of interest.
Scholarships are intended for full-time and part-time students with the goal of obtaining a degree or academic certificate.
The deadline for the first round of scholarship applications was April 24, 2020 and five scholarships were awarded in May 2020 for a total value of $17,500.
